18 month old Sunshine is one of the mothers from the PNW rescue over the summer. She and her 6 one-week-old babies was the first family we were able to bring into foster care from the group of un-socialized and neglected dogs.  She was very sick with mastisis and pyometra and needed emergency surgery to save her life.  Yet, she was still nursing her puppies and being an excellent mother while being so sick.  After the surgery she totally shut down.  She was doing her best to stay invisible and would hide in any corner she could find.  When her foster mom approached, she would tremble.

Fast forward 6 months later and the incredible effort made by her foster family to help her feel safe and loved, she comes to them with wagging tail and looking for love.  She’s like a puppy for the first time and will play, pounce and smile with joy.  She has perfected the pyr paw and loves to lay at her foster mom’s feet when relaxing.  She loves to go out on walk outings and her favorite is the beach where she can play in the water.  Sunshine gets along with all dogs, cats are unknown.

Sunshine is still extremely sensitive and needs a gentle, kind, and calm family to show her how lovely family life can be-sudden fast movements and loud noises still can trigger her fight/flight system to cause her to run and hide.  She continues to be on high alert but with her foster family’s help, she has gotten much better.  She will continue to need help with leash walking (she is strong), jumping up, and TRUST.  Her new family will be able to see past her challenges caused by 12 months of neglect and see her true potential.  It might take some time (months potentially) to earn her love and trust, but once you do you’ll have a friend for life.  She is being fostered in Florence, OR.  We would like to keep Sunshine close so only local (OR/WA) apps will be considered for this girl.
